When your network grows big, you can’t do it all. Don’t even try to, or you’ll run yourself ragged. The secret of success is to ‘grow’ your own people and, by doing so, let them handle their own affairs. Your role becomes more one of monitoring what is going on, leaving you free to spend more time looking for prospects. Never forget to build, build, build.
If you have well-developed and trained distributors in your downline you can, with confidence, leave them to build their own businesses. To be sure, always make yourself available to handle a crisis or to give expert advice, but don’t hinder your downliners with a ‘telling’ management style. Once you’ve given them a head start, push them from the nest and they’ll fly!
Lead by example
As was said earlier, a networker is an influence agent. Ask yourself this question: who has influenced your life the most? It could be a number of people:
- your parents who cared for you when you were younger and were your first role models
- a good friend; someone with whom you have an uncommon bond and can share deep thoughts
- a public figure, such as a charismatic politician, a film star or a religious leader.
No matter who comes to your mind, you can bet that, to a degree, you tried to model your life on theirs. They were your role models. They led by example. You must, too. Never expect a networker to do anything that you are not prepared to do.
The challenge of leadership
What we all really want is inspired leadership; someone we will follow to the ends of the earth because we believe in him or her and their vision of where they are going.
What are some of the challenges of leadership? We suggest these:
- to build up a spirited and cohesive team
- to inspire through a shared vision
- to act as a role model for everyone in your downlineto build solid work relationships; to be virtually in a partnership with your downliners
- to establish trusting relationships
- to inspire your team to reach beyond normal productivity
- to establish patterns of success.
Successful network marketers are prepared to accept the challenge of leadership. They know that success breeds success. They are aware that their success can be copied, and they are glad to be able to help others to grow their own networks.
